Moi?

I should mention this early on that I'm a man, and I'm not homosexual. Not there's anything wrong with that but this should be clarified up front in case you have any confusions.

A lot of people posting about fashion on the web are female. I'm not going to bother to discuss on how it has come to a situation like this, but let me say that caring about your image is a good thing as long as you don't over do it, male or female. A lot of men are clueless when it come to the daily ritual of dressing everyday, I was one of them. I'm no expert, but I know what I like and I wear them.

Now, I must go to work on my Armani coat alternation. Hopefully I won't mess it up.

Tailors

Well, even though I'm not rich, I do own a few items from these labels. One thing you soon realize about Ready to Wear items (which are pretty much everything you see in these stores regardless how much they cost) is that most of them don't fit you exactly how you want them to be. If you get the chest size right, the sleeves will be too long, or vice versa. So you want to make sure you look the best in your new Armani suit, you send it to a tailor and wish they'll do the magic.

But the truth is, good tailors are hard to find. I mean seriously, if they are good, they'd be working for a big name fashion label. Most tailors I've dealt with are mediocre. The best one I have found, an European tailor named Zoli, happens to be an hour of drive away from me. The worst ones has lost buttons on my trench coat when I wanted her to move them. Sometimes you wonder what exactly they do to your cloth when you send it to them. You don't know, I don't know either. Tailors are just like doctors, they are mystical and god like. What doctors do to us, we don't know, but we try to be nice to them hoping we don't suffer too much. Same goes for tailors.

Labels

Like a lot of people I was clueless about fashion, I looked around on magazines, online forums, stores and so on to see what look nice and fit my personality. I started with Gap, then Banana Republic, then went to Macy's, Ralph Lauren, Nordstrom, and later found out about Bloomingdales, Saks Fifth Ave., Neiman Marcus, Armani, Zegna, Gucci, Burberry, Prada, D&G, Versace, and so on. You can see the trend. Of course, as I become familiar to various labels, I also realize just how much it can cost you for wear these labels. Does it really worth it?

Fashion

When people talk about fashion, what immediately come to mind are generally the cat walk, fancy clothes on beautiful models, celebrities, and so on. But when you go to study Fashion in school, it means much more, from designing style, defining pattern, fabric, fitting, sewing and a bunch of other things. In fact, you will never understand fashion till you have some knowledge in these areas. You may have good taste and style, but unless you are rich enough to have a tailor custom make everything you wear, you will not be as stylish you could be unless you are very lucky to get the item exactly you want with great fit. That, my friend, rarely happens.

I guess we all want to dress well if the following conditions are fulfilled:
  • if we know what dress well means (but it's relative and different for everyone)
  • if it's cheap enough
  • if the reward of dressing well is greater than our urge of laziness
So, in fashion, it's like pretty much everything else, it appears that there's no way to be objective. Some people love Prada, others think it's lame. But there's one thing you should know is that Art is subjective but Craft is not. The quality of garments are not created equal. For a lot of people, an Armani suit looks the same as a Walmart suit beside they have different labels. Why does one suit cost $2000 and the other cost $100? Is it really just the brand?

I've never attended a fashion school, and never really had any formal training in fashion. It's just about a year ago I started to improve my wardrobe. I mean I didn't really care much about what I wear other than if they are comfortable and keep me warm. But as I get close to graduate from school, I start to interview for internships and actually working in a company. It has became necessary for me to make sure I'm presenting myself with the right image.
